WASHINGTON: US first lady Jill Biden will meet with Japanese Emperor Naruhito at Tokyo’s Imperial Palace on Friday during a trip to Japan to attend the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, the White House said Wednesday.

On Thursday, the first lady is set to arrive at the US military’s Yokota Air Base in Tokyo and attend a dinner party to be hosted by Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide and his wife, Mariko, at the State Guest House Akasaka Palace.

The first lady will also cheer US athletes competing in the Olympics in several events, including hosting a softball watch party on Saturday.

President Joe Biden and the first lady think it is important to “cheer on our athletes and show support for the United States at the highest level,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.

The first lady and her delegation “will have limited public interaction, and they will be taking every precaution throughout the course of their trip,” Psaki said, referring to the spread of COVID-19 infections in Tokyo.
