TOKYO: An earthquake with a magnitude of 3 on the Japanese scale of 7 struck the Tohoku region that encompasses Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Miyagi prefectures on Wednesday. It hit with a maximum seismic intensity of 3, causing some buildings in Tokyo to sway softly.
The epicenter of the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 40 kilometers off the coast of Ibaraki prefecture northeast of Tokyo at around 9:10 5:33, with an estimated magnitude of 6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The seismic intensity of 3 was observed in southern Miyagi prefecture, Fukushima prefecture, northern Ibaraki prefecture, and southern Tochigi prefecture.
It was not powerful enough to trigger a tsunami, and there are no fears of a tsunami following the earthquake, the agency said.
