On August 16, Japan’s Foreign Minister, MOTEGI Toshimitsu, kicked off his 10-day tour beginning with talks in Egypt between Motegi and Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.

Motegi and Shoukry discussed regional issues while also exploring ways to fortify bilateral relations between Japan and Egypt.

The talks were held in the presence of delegations from both nations in Cairo.

In the joint news conference in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart, Motegi called for all concerned parties in Afghanistan to ensure the protection of lives and property in the country, while also urging all parties to work on restoring security and order in the country after the Taliban seized power there. 

He said he has agreed to cooperate with Egypt, as an influential power in the Islamic world, to ensure that the latest developments in Afghanistan don’t cause further unrest.

This occurred after Japan had expressed its concern regarding the situation in Afghanistan with both, the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Shoukry. 

During the press conference, Motegi thanked the Egyptian government for resolving the shipping vessel incident that had blocked the Suez Canal for nearly a week earlier this year. He added that Japan had contributed to the development of the Suez Canal through contributing to several economic cooperation projects and expressed the willingness to boost cooper willing to boost collaboration on issues related to the vital shipping channel.

Recounting his meeting with Shoukry, Motegi said that they discussed increasing cooperation between the two countries on the situation in the Middle East, which is expected to be high on the agenda during the eighth meeting of the 2022 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).

Japan’s top diplomat hailed efforts made by Egypt in attempt to achieve peace in the Middle East and affirmed the country’s determination to continue to coordinate their actions with Egypt to aid in the establishment of this objective in the region.

Motegi said that he also discussed bilateral relations and regional issues, to which he referred to as “effective.” Shoukry affirmed the strong strategic partnership that exists between the two countries by affirming the availability of promising opportunities to intensify their economic cooperation based on mutual interests.

Shoukry said that he discussed the Palestinian issue and the crisis in Syria, Libya, Iraq and Yemen with Motegi.

“[We affirmed] the necessity to continue coordination and joint work based on a joint vision between the two countries to achieve stability and defuse the crises,” Shoukry said.

Shoukry outlined the importance of utilising multilateral dialogue to promote denuclearisation with his counterpart and reaffirmed Egypt’s support in Japan’s endeavour towards enhancing  development efforts in Africa. He also thanked Japan for the efforts put into organizing and hosting the summer Olympics this year, praising Japan’s achievements in this aspect.
