TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale hit Ishikawa Prefecture on the Japan Sea coast on Thursday. The quake registered in intensity of five on the Japanese scale but there was no danger from a tsunami.
It is the first time since March 13 last year that a quake with a similar intensity has been recorded in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture. The quake was not felt in Tokyo.
According to a preliminary analysis by the Disaster Prevention Science and Technology Laboratory, the earthquake was believed to be an inverted fault earthquake with a northwest-southeast pressure axis. Since May this year, there has been considerable earthquake activity in the area.
The 1799 Kanazawa Earthquake – M6.0 on the Richter Scale –caused deaths and destruction in the area, including liquefaction in Kanazawa City and Uchinada Town.
On March 25, 2007, a 6.9 earthquake hit 40km off the west-southwest coast of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture and this also caused liquefaction, which saw subsidence of structures and manholes lifted.
