TOKYO: The Japanese government welcomed the decision by the US Government on Tuesday to lift the import restrictions on food products from Japan due to radioactive substances.

“The US Government had continued to impose the import restrictions on Japanese food products after the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident. Japan had continued to strongly request the lifting of the import restrictions, including on the occasion of the Japan-US Summit Meeting in April,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Government of Japan welcomes the US Government’s lifting of its restrictions, toward the upcoming visit by Prime Minister Suga to the United States, as support for the reconstruction of the affected areas as we mark a decade since the Great East Japan Earthquake, it said.

Because of contamination fears, the United States had blocked produce from Japan’s radiation zone, including milk, vegetable, and fruit imports from areas near the tsunami-damaged nuclear plant.
