Japan has offered financial aid to Lebanon by supporting an initiative organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) aimed at providing fire-fighting and personal protective gear as a result of massive fires like those that occurred in July and August.

The grant reflects the strong bond between Japan and Lebanon, and Japan’s support for environmental projects taking place in the country.

The project took place in collaboration with local NGO, Akkarouna, and not only included equipment supply but also offered training to assist with disaster risk management.

The fires that occurred this year in Northern Lebanon are becoming more common, impacting the country’s forests and agricultural landscapes.

The IOM initiative not only had environmental benefits, but also aided the local communities that offered assistance through the “cash-for-work” component.
