TOKYO: An earthquake struck near the center of Tokyo on Wednesday, shaking Japan’s capital and parts of the surrounding prefectures.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale and was at a depth of around 30km. It had a seismic intensity of 3 on Japan’s 10-point scale.
The quake struck at 11:33 on Wednesday morning, the first day of Japan’s New Year holiday period. There was no danger of a tsunami.
Japan has been struck by a series of earthquakes recently, with Tokyo being shaken by fairly large quakes on several occasions in 2021.
Hundreds of earthquakes have struck islands of the southern prefecture of Kagoshima this month, including one that measured 6.3 on the Richter scale.
