TOKYO: An earthquake observing a maximum seismic intensity of 3 struck Ishikawa Prefecture in northern Japan at around 14:52 on Dec. 31.
The quake had a magnitude of 4.2 at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter of the quake, the 10th significant temblor in the area this year, was at the Noto Peninsula, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.
There was no danger of a tsunami, despite being near the coast of the Sea of Japan.
