6.3 magnitude quake strikes Japanese remote island

TOKYO: An earthquake registering 6.3 on the Richter Scale struck near the Japanese island of Chichijima on Tuesday. Chichijima Island is part of the Ogasawara chain of islands approximately 1,000 km south of Tokyo.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 70 km at 6:09 a.m. and had a seismic intensity of 5 on the Japanese scale.

Despite the quake being focused in the ocean, there was no danger of a tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake triggered an Earthquake Early Warning with an estimated magnitude of 8.5.Although the actual quake was lower, the Agency warned the 2,000 residents of Chichijima to stay alert for further quakes
