US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has asked Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to increase the country's financial support for the US troops stationed there.
“I’ve asked Japan. I said to Prime Minister Abe, a friend of mine, Shinzo. I said, ‘You have to...help us out here,’” Trump said at the outset of a meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in London.
Trump also said he told Abe that the United States is “paying a lot of money” to cover costs for the US forces in Japan although Japan is “a wealthy nation,” adding, “He’s going to do a lot.”
