TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko met with Sven Koopmans, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process on Monday and discussed the situation in Gaza and the region.

Both sides agreed to work together to achieve a two-state solution, including through the “Peace Day Effort” initiative.

Kamikawa “expressed her respect” for the efforts of the EU and Special Representative Koopmans to achieve peace in the Middle East. She said Japan, as a G7 member, was willing to cooperate with the EU on issues related to the Middle East, including the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Koopmans expressed his appreciation for Japan’s efforts to address and help with these issues, and explained the EU’s efforts to revitalize the Middle East peace process, including the “Peace Day Effort” initiative. He added that he was hopeful of Japan playing a role in the process.

The “Peace Day Effort” builds on the Arab Peace Initiative, which was adopted by the Arab States to lay out their vision for a comprehensive regional peace predicated on the full withdrawal from all Palestinian and Arab territories occupied since 1967 in exchange for full normalization.
