TOKYO: A large police presence and many journalists were visible around Tokyo University on Saturday after three people were stabbed as the university prepared to hold important national examinations.  

According to Japanese media, two of the three people stabbed were students. The incident occurred at 8:35 a.m. before the two-day Tokyo University entrance exam.

A 17-year-old suspect from Nagoya was arrested after the attempted murders and told police that he was failing in school.  Two students were hospitalized with minor injuries and an older person was injured more seriously.

During a press conference, the Minister of Education and Sports declared that the government was taking measures to secure the surroundings of the examination places, which take place across the nation.

Each year more than half a million students apply to enter all the universities in the country. The University of Tokyo is one of the most prestigious universities in the country and the competition is very strong to have the honor of entering Japan’s top university.
