TOKYO: A 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the sea off Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Sunday but there was no tsunami alert issued.
The quake, which happened at a depth of around 70 kilometers, registered an intensity of 3 on Japan’s 10-point scale.
The nearest point on land was Tokaichi town but the quake was felt along Hokkaido’s eastern seaboard.
In the past week, Japan’s southern island chain of Okinawa was also hit by a number of earthquakes, including one registering 5.8 on the Richter scale.
