The United Nations General Assembly adopted in the plenary meeting held today December 13 , the draft resolution entitled “Joint Courses of Action and Future-oriented Dialogue towards a world without nuclear weapons”, submitted by Japan was adopted with the supports of 160 countries.
The foreign ministry in Tokyo said this draft resolution was adopted in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on November 2 and it reaffirms the commitment to the ultimate goal of eliminating nuclear weapons.
Looking ahead to the 2020 NPT Review Conference, the draft resolution also stresses the importance for the international community to take immediate actions together and to conduct future-oriented dialogues on nuclear disarmament with a view to maintaining and strengthening the regime of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), MOFA said.
Through this draft resolution, Japan aims to contribute to the 2020 NPT Review Conference. The draft resolution this year was adopted with widespread supports from many states including nuclear weapon states and the states in favor of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The ministry stressed japan will continue to work tenaciously to proceed steadily towards the realization of a world free of nuclear weapons.
Results of the voting for the adoption of the draft resolution in the Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly were approved by 160 countries, and opposed by China, North Korea, Russia, and Syria. 21 countries abstained.
Meanwhile, results of the voting for the adoption of the draft resolution in the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly were
approved by 148 countries, opposed by China, North Korea, Russia, and Syria. Abstentions were by 26 countries.
