NAHA, Okinawa Pref.: Four Chinese coast guard ships sailed in Japanese waters off the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea for about one hour and 40 minutes Tuesday.

It was the first such intrusion by Chinese government ships since March 16. The Japanese-administered islands in Okinawa Prefecture are claimed by China, which calls them Diaoyu.

The four Haijing ships entered Japanese waters east-southeast of Kubajima Island in the Senkaku chain between 9:45 a.m. (12:45 a.m. GMT) and 10:05 a.m., according to the Japan Coast Guard’s 11th regional headquarters in Naha, the capital of Okinawa.

They left the waters north of the island between 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
