Former Japanese environment minister Mochizuki dies at 72

TOKYO: Former Japanese Environment Minister Yoshio Mochizuki, a House of Representatives lawmaker of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, died in his home prefecture of Shizuoka, central Japan, on Thursday. He was 72.

Mochizuki, who was first elected from the Shizuoka No. 4 constituency in 1996, also served as state minister of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism.

Within the LDP, he belonged to the faction led by former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, currently chairman of the party's Policy Research Council.

In the Shizuoka constituency, a by-election is expected to be held on April 26 next year.
