TOKYO: Japan strongly condemned the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank and demanded “an immediate thorough investigation conducted under serious cooperation of relevant authorities.”

An official statement issued on May 13 by the foreign ministry in Tokyo said Japan extends its sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

“Japan strongly expects that an immediate and thorough investigation will be conducted under serious cooperation of relevant authorities and stresses the need to bring those responsible to justice,” the statement said.

Japan also called for the “need to refrain from actions that escalate tensions in the region.”
