TOKYO: After last year’s Supreme Court ruling that held companies and the government responsible for disease caused by exposure to asbestos, several thousand workers gathered at Hibiya Hall in Tokyo to demand a public apology and compensation.

Many politicians and representatives of political parties took to the floor demanding reparations.

Akira Koike from the Communist Party, Yuichiro Tamaki from the People’s Party, a representative from the Shinsengumi Party and a representative from the Constitutional Party took turns to speak on behalf of workers exposed to asbestos.

Workers from Kyushu, Tohoku and Hokkaido told their personal stories of suffering and insisted on a public apology from manufacturers for exposing them and their fellow workers to the dangers of asbestos.

A number of large companies responsible for using asbestos have refused to publicly apologize.
