While many countries around the world fully lifted mask mandates, the Japanese government finally relaxed its requirement for mask use as it overhauls its COVID-19 policy.

Infection rates have been falling globally and in Japan, with Tokyo announcing 2,335 new infections as of June 2.

Japanese officials also considered the risk of heatstroke in the coming summer months, leading them to revamp their mask policy.

The new guidelines state that people do not need to wear masks outdoors, except when having a close conversation. Indoors, masks are not needed, but people need to maintain a two meter distance from others and avoid making conversation.

Frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact are still highly encouraged by officials.

For school students, masks are not required when playing outside, keeping in mind to maintain a safe distance from others. They are also not mandated during physical education classes, at pools and inside gymnastic halls.

The government, however, still upholds its position that masks are vital to prevent infection.
