Tokyo

The Japanese governments released on Monday an action plan for supporting workers in their 30s or 40s, from the so-called “employment ice age” generation.

The action plan calls for introducing new mid-career recruitment systems at the Cabinet Office and the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry by the end of fiscal 2019, while expanding subsidies to companies for hiring ice-age workers.

Under the plan, the government will target an increase of 300,000 in the total number of regular employees from the generation in the public and private sectors. The government plans to spend over 65 billion yen on related measures through fiscal 2022.

According to the action plan, the National Personnel Authority may start to hold unified examinations to hire mid-career workers for all central government agencies.

Furthermore, a new subsidy program will be launched for local governments working actively to facilitate the social participation and employment of ice age workers.
