TOKYO: The year-end balance of banknotes in circulation in Japan is forecast to hit a record high for the 10th straight year in 2019, informed sources told Jiji Press.

The balance is estimated to reach around 112,800 billion yen, eclipsing the current year-end record of 110,362.5 billion yen set in 2018, the sources said.

The estimated balance represents an increase of about 40 percent from 80,954.2 billion yen a decade before.

While cashless payments are becoming popular, people appear to still prefer cash. In addition, demand for yen is apparently growing amid an increasing number of visitors to Japan.
