TOKYO: KONO Taro, the head of the public relations department of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is infected with the new coronavirus, local media reported quoting the House of Representatives office said on Wednesday.

Kono’s infection was discovered on July 12 and he is currently recovering at home.

Kono, who was previously in charge of the vaccine campaign in Japan, is the 78th member of the Diet to have been infected. He was inoculated for the third time at Self-Defense Forces vaccine center in March this year.

He reportedly had a sore throat on the morning of July 12 and tested positive for the virus. Although he has mild symptoms, he has been staying at home since testing positive.

Kono participated in the ballot counting at the LDP’s headquarters on July 10, the day of the Upper House election. He also attended an extraordinary board meeting of the LDP and the wake of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the 11th.
