TOKYO: Tokyo confirmed 418 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Sunday, the metropolitan government said.

The daily count in the Japanese capital fell below 500 for the first time in three days.

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the Japanese capital, counted using Tokyo’s own criteria, stood unchanged from Saturday at 67,

Of the new infection cases in Tokyo, 110 people are in their 20s, 80 in their 40s and 70 in their 30s, according to the metropolitan government. People aged 65 or over accounted for 55.

The daily count of new COVID-19 cases hit a record high in the northeastern prefecture of Yamagata, at 11. In the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, the daily number of new cases came to 192, falling below 200 for the first time in four days.
