TOKYO: The Tokyo area was hit by two moderate earthquakes on Saturday morning.
The first struck the Chiba region to the east of Tokyo at 5:24 a.m. and was centered on the Kujukuri coastline on Japan’s Pacific coast. It was at a relatively shallow depth of 30 km and jolted Chiba residents awake, but no serious damage was reported.
The quake registered 3 on Japan’s 10-point seismic intensity scale and 4.1 on the Richter Scale.
The second occurred at 11:55 a.m. with the epicenter in Tokyo and covered a wide area around the capital.
The 4.2 magnitude quake struck at a depth of 80 km and had a seismic intensity of 2 on Japan’s scale.
The Japan Meteorological Office said there was no danger of a tsunami from both quakes.
