TOKYO: An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 4.6 at its epicenter shook the Kanto region at 9:54 on Friday, registering a seismic intensity of 3 in Tochigi and Gunma prefectures north of Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports of damage and the Japan Meteorological Agency said there were no fears of a tsunami following the earthquake.

Some buildings in central Tokyo swayed lightly with a relatively light seismic intensity of 2. Eleven prefectures registered a similar intensity.

The epicenter of the quake was in the south of Ibaraki Prefecture northwest of Tokyo at a depth of about 80 km.

The Tokai No.2 Nuclear Power Station in Ibaraki Prefecture is currently out of operation and observed no abnormalities, the operating company said.
