Tokyo: The Russian Embassy in Japan said Tuesday that it has protested Japan’s decision to expel a Russian consul in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
Russian Ambassador to Japan Mikhail Galuzin told Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori that the decision was inappropriate and arbitrary, according to a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app.
Japan made the decision in retaliation for Russia’s expulsion of a Japanese consul in Vladivostok late last month.
Galuzin said the Japanese move was groundless, according to the statement.
The statement said Japan’s response will only work to worsen bilateral relations further.
