Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Uruguay’s President Luis Lacalle Pou on Friday agreed to set up a joint committee to promote Japanese investment in Uruguay, as part of efforts to enhance economic ties between the two nations.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Lacalle Pou in Tokyo, Kishida said that the economic relationship between the two nations has massive potential.
Voicing his expectations for a boost in Uruguay’s food exports to Japan, Lacalle Pou said that he hopes Japan will use Uruguay as a platform for the development of South America.
The two leaders also discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and North Korea’s repeated ballistic missiles firings. They agreed that Russia’s use of or threat to use nuclear weapons is unacceptable.
Lacalle Pou became the first Uruguay president to visit Japan since November 2015.
