TOKYO: A moderately strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit a large part of eastern Japan on Monday.

The quake struck in the Pacific Ocean off Mie Prefecture, 350 kilometres to the west of Tokyo, but the shaking was mainly felt in the area around Tokyo.

The quake registered a seismic intensity of 4 in both Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures to the northeast of Tokyo. It was strong enough to be felt nearly 1,000 km away from the epicenter. Buildings in Tokyo shook quite violently for a short time.

The epicenter was quite deep at 350 kilometres and there was no danger of a tsunami. Earthquakes with epicenters deeper than 100 km are called deep earthquakes, and seismic waves tend to propagate along subducting plates. Therefore, the tremors farther from the epicenter may be stronger than those near the epicenter.
