TOKYO: Japan has adopted a new “National Security Strategy (NSS)” that has been formed by the National Security Council (NSC) and approved by the Cabinet, Foreign Minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa announced in a statement on Friday.
Japan’s “National Defense Strategy (NDS)” and the “Defense Buildup Program” were also adopted based on the new NSS.
Hayashi said that it is Japan’s intention to utilize “vigorous diplomacy” to achieve its goals as “the international community is facing changes defining an era.”
“The very foundation of the international order is being shaken and the world stands at a historic crossroads,” Hayashi stated. “As Japan is finding itself in the midst of the most severe and complex security environment since the end of WWII, maintaining and developing a free and open international order based on the rule of law are becoming as important as it has ever been.”
Hayashi said that the new security strategy sets forth diplomatic capabilities as its first pillar: “Building on its long record of diplomatic undertakings and economic activities to promote peace, stability, and prosperity worldwide, Japan will carry out vigorous diplomacy to prevent crises and proactively create a peaceful and stable international environment.”
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will strive to improve the security environment surrounding Japan by steadily executing strategic approaches such as strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance, coordinating with like-minded countries and others including further promoting efforts in pursuit of realizing a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’.”
