
TOKYO: Japan’s foreign minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa, on February 28, called on the parties concerned in Yemen, especially the Houthis, to take necessary actions to renew the truce, paving the way for constructive talks towards realizing durable peace, and pledged to improve humanitarian aid in Yemen with an additional sum of approximately 19 million USD in the current year of 2023.
In a video message statement at the High-Level Pledging Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, held in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister Hayashi also stated that he hopes “Japan’s support will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people,” according to a statement by the foreign ministry in Tokyo.
At the beginning, the co-chairs of the event, including.. António Guterrrus, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ignazio Cassis, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, and Johan Forssell, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of the Kingdom of Sweden, described in detail, the serious humanitarian situation in Yemen caused by the protracted conflict, which is considered “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis”, and called for the importance of the international community’s assistance for Yemen, the statement said.
Minister Hayashi also stated that Japan, a major donor to Yemen, as a member of the UN Security Council and the G7 Presidency, will continue to provide necessary assistance and make diplomatic efforts, in cooperation with the countries concerned, to realize peace and stability in Yemen.
