Japan and Mauritius plan to work together on maritime security

TOKYO: YAMADA Kenji, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on Thursday met with Mauritian Foreign Minister Alan Ganoo, who stated that Mauritius supports a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) and expressed his hope to further develop bilateral relations between Mauritius and Japan, including on maritime security. 

 

The two ministers met in in Delhi, India, and confirmed that they will continue to work closely together on subjects such as UN Security Council reform and the regional situation in East Asia, including North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues.  

 

Yamada stated that this year marks the 30th anniversary of TICAD and he was pleased to witness the strengthening of bilateral relations through the Japan-African Union (AU) Parliamentary Friendship League. He also stated that Japan is following closely the role of Mauritius as a gateway for investment in Africa. 

 

Minister Ganoo expressed his gratitude for the wide range of Japan’s support, including climate change and TICAD 8. 

 

On the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Yamada welcomed the fact that Mauritius voted in favor of UN resolutions supporting Ukraine and stated that it is important for the international community as a whole to send a clear message to Russia.
