TOKYO: The Japanese government is considering raising paternity leave benefits to some 80 pct of wages from 67 pct at present, people familiar with the matter told Jiji Press Wednesday.

Full wages will be actually guaranteed as eligible workers are exempt from paying social welfare premiums, the people said.

Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio is expected to announce the raise as early as Friday, the people said. The move is designed to encourage more men to take part in child-rearing, the people said.

The benefits will be paid under a program that allows men to take paternity leave of up to four weeks within eight weeks after a child is born.
