TOKYO: The Japanese government is considering using the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT in administrative work.
The move is aimed at streamlining work such as preparing answers to parliamentary questions, reducing the burden on public servants.
“We will pursue the possibility of using (ChatGPT) to reduce the workload of national public servants,” economy minister NISHIMURA Yasutoshi said at a press conference Tuesday, citing the creation of responses to parliamentary questions as an example.
Digital reform minister KONO Taro said at a press conference Friday that there are issues that need to be addressed in using the chatbot, such as concerns about the handling of data inputted into it and the fact that incorrect information is sometimes produced.
Kono expressed a willingness to consider using ChatGPT after such concerns are resolved.
Western nations are moving to impose regulations on ChatGPT out of concerns about the handling of information and for privacy protection. Italy has temporarily banned the use of the AI tool.
Communications minister Takeaki Matsumoto said that AI will be on the agenda at a meeting of the Group of Seven digital and technology ministers set for later this month in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture in eastern Japan.
He hopes to lead discussions on making international rules aimed at promoting the use of AI.
