TOKYO: Japan Foreign Minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa on Sunday issued a statement expressing “concern” over the fighting in Sudan.
On Saturday, there were clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum, leaving a large number of casualties.
Hayashi stated: “The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the situation that undermines the transition to civilian rule based on the Constitutional Declaration. We also call for all actors to stop the violence immediately.”
“The Government of Japan, together with G7 and other like-minded countries, closely cooperates with the regional countries and supports Sudanese efforts toward the restoration of transition to civilian rule in Sudan.”
Sudanese groups and the ruling military junta failed to reach an agreement last week on a handover of power.
Both sides are battling with heavy weapons and the army says it has used fighter jets to bombard targets.
