TOKYO: A strong earthquake shook eastern Japan on Friday evening with a magnitude of 6.2, registering lower 5, the fifth-highest level on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, in Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures, the country’s meteorological agency said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
Large buildings in the capital shook as the quake hit at a depth of 50 kilometres (31 miles) at 7:03 pm local time (1003 GMT) in Pacific waters off Japan’s Chiba region.
The epicentre was near Choshi, which is about 100 km from Tokyo and is at the easternmost point on Japan’s main island of Honshu.
Buildings near the epicenter suffered severe shaking and transportation services were disrupted at one of the busiest times of the day. Rail services in Chiba Prefecture were halted and both runways at Narita Airport were closed for inspections.
A number of similar-sized earthquakes have hit Japan in recent weeks, sparking fears of an even larger earthquake. Medium-sized earthquakes often trigger larger quakes and there could be many aftershocks.
