TOKYO: Japan’s Foreign Minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa on Tuesday noted that the G7 summit meeting — on nuclear disarmament — reaffirmed the G7 leaders’ commitment toward a world without nuclear weapons.

Hayashi was responding to a question from Arab News Japan at a Foreign Ministry press conference on the results of the recent Hiroshima summit. His conclusion was that it has reinforced the notion that the nuclear status quo based on the nuclear umbrella and deterrence hasn’t changed.

Despite Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio and his government hoping for a nuclear-free world, that goal seems unrealistic when six nuclear states – Russia, China, North Korea, India, Pakistan and Israel – were not included in the outreach countries in the summit. So critics wonder what impact, if any, will the holding of the anti-nuclear summit in Hiroshima have on the nuclear weapons situation?

Hayashi argued the international security environment is becoming increasingly severe. With regard to China and Russia, the G7 expressed concerns about recent actions and called upon the two countries to comply with their obligations under the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.

They have also called upon all countries, including countries outside of the NPT, to declare and maintain a moratorium on nuclear testing.

“The position of Japan is that we will respond appropriately to the realistic security threat in front of us and we will use the Hiroshima Vision as a strong step,” Hayashi said. “We will steadily implement the objectives of the Hiroshima action plan and we will reinforce realistic and practical steps.”
