DOHA, Qatar:  Mustafa Barghouti, a Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, told Arab News Japan on the sidelines of the Doha Forum that Israel would like to see the region destabilized and fragmented.

“They are doing everything they can to cut it into pieces because Israel does not want any country in the region to be strong, powerful, or capable,” he said. “There is a very clear linkage between what is happening in Syria and Gaza and we do hope that the Syrian people will find a way to peace.”

“For us, the most important issue is to sustain and keep the unity of Syria as a country and to serve the interests of the Syrian people. Israel has very bad intentions regarding Syria,” Barghouti said.

Barghouti says he hopes that the Syrian people will find a way through policy and dialogue to end its civil war and find a way for the country “to maintain its unity, to have democracy and prosperity for the Syrian people who have always been supportive of the struggle of the Palestinian people.”
