RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and Syria on Wednesday released a joint statement detailing their efforts to enhance cooperation and reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

The statement was released following a meeting between Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad held in Jeddah on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the two discussed the joint efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves Syria’s unity, security, stability, and territorial integrity.

The joint statement detailed the two sides also welcoming the start of procedures for resuming consular services and flights in the two countries.

The two sides also agreed on the importance of resolving humanitarian challenges and creating a suitable environment for aid to reach all regions in Syria.

Among the humanitarian topics discussed during the meeting were ways of creating the proper conditions for the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons safely to their homeland as well as measures that can be taken to stabilize the situation taking place in Syrian territories.

The Kingdom and Syria both stressed the importance of strengthening security and combating terrorism in all forms and enhancing cooperation to combat drug smuggling and trafficking.

Mekdad expressed Syria’s appreciation for the Saudi Arabia’s efforts to help end the Syrian crisis and for providing humanitarian and relief aid to those affected by the earthquakes that struck Syria last February.

As part of the Kingdom’s efforts to aid those affected by the earthquake that hit parts of northern Syria and southern Turkiye in February, the Kingdom sent 16 aircraft carrying more than 85 tons of aid, including 1,000 shelter tents, 13,329 articles of clothing, 3,600 blankets, and 3,600 mattresses.

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Al-Khuraiji on Wednesday received the Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad upon his arrival at King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah.
