TOKYO: Japanese animation legend Go Nagai celebrated his 76th birthday on Sept 6, instigating celebratory messages from fans who took to their social media platforms to congratulate the artist.

Nagai’s popularity moved well beyond Japan and East Asia. He was particularly popular in France and Italy and also had great success in the United States. He also had a huge following in the Middle East after his early success in Lebanon.

Go Nagai also happens to be the creative force behind the corporate logotype of Arab News Japan that has remained unchanged since it was used during the first publication in 2019.

Grendizer was hugely popular and many comics were published for the Arab-speaking market, merchandise was also a big seller in the region.

Nagai’s early success came with the initial publication of Japanese manga Shonen Jump, which sold a million copies per issue. At 76, Nagai retains his youthful outlook and remains very popular.

The “Nagai Go Wonderland Museum”  opened in 2019 where Super Robot Mazinger Z welcomes visitors at the entrance and  a life-size Devilman statue is on display.
