Tokyo stocks closed higher on Wednesday on hopes for a fresh stimulus package from a new prime minister, while a cheap yen offset profit-taking.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index added 0.89 percent, or 265.07 points, to 30,181.21, while the broader Topix index rose 0.79 percent, or 16.23 points, to 2,079.61.
