TOKYO: Mitsubishi Motors Corp. may suspend operations of its production and sales hub in Russia following economic sanctions against the country, company officials said Tuesday.

The suspension is likely as the sanctions are expected to affect the local supply network, according to the officials.

The Japanese automaker does not expect parts supply to be stopped immediately as the local payments are based on the ruble.

However, it is uncertain when the supply network will be back to normal due to confusion in logistics, sources familiar with the matter said.

The production base, located in Kaluga, southwest of Moscow, is operated by a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors and U.S.-European group Stellantis. In 2021, the plant manufactured a total of 21,000 vehicles, including the Japanese automaker’s Pajero Sport SUV.
