TOKYO: Mazda Motor Corp. said Thursday that it plans to make its factories across the world carbon-neutral by 2035.

The Japanese automaker has already pledged to manufacture only electrified vehicles by 2030.

The company will cut energy consumption at factories by reviewing materials used in such processes as painting, which requires high-temperature drying, and heat treatment to increase their strength.

Mazda will also switch electricity it uses to that generated from renewable sources, such as solar power, and introduce biofuels for vehicles that transport parts.

The automaker aims to make its whole supply chain, ranging from commodity mining to disposal and recycling after use, carbon-neutral by 2050.

Rival Japanese automakers are also moving to go carbon-neutral.

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its plants across the globe to effectively zero by 2035.

On Thursday, Suzuki Motor Corp. said that it will expand its renewable energy use in India to cut nearly 10 pct of its emissions.
