TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp.’s Yaris topped the new car sales rankings in Japan in May, reclaiming the top spot for the first time in five months, industry data showed Monday.

Sales of the subcompact came to 12,400 units.

Honda Motor Co.’s N-Box minivehicle, which ranked first from January to April, fell to fourth place due to production cuts. N-Box sales stood at 8,631 units.

Toyota’s Corolla sedan came in second with sales of 9,424 units, followed by Suzuki Motor Corp.’s Spacia minivehicle with 8,670 units. Toyota’s Roomy small minivan ranked fifth with 7,704 units.

Automakers continued to have difficulties procuring parts in May partly due to Shanghai’s COVID-19 lockdown, lifted at the start of June.

In particular, reduced production in and after April pushed down sales in May.

All five top-selling models except Corolla marked a year-on-year fall in sales.

The rankings are based on data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association.
