SENDAI, Miyagi Pref.: Sendai High Court ordered Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. to pay 279 million yen in damages to about 140 people who evacuated due to the 2011 nuclear accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima No. 1 plant.

The plaintiffs are mostly residents of the Haramachi district in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, who had to leave their homes because of the triple meltdown at the tsunami-stricken plant.

The amount is higher than the 146 million yen ordered by the Iwaki branch of Fukushima District Court in November 2020. In its ruling, the branch told TEPCO to pay 100,000 yen per head in monthly compensation for evacuation, as well as an additional 700,000 yen to 1.5 million yen in consolation money for changes to their hometowns caused by the nuclear disaster.
