TOKYO: The number of visitors to Japan by cruise ships fell 12.2 pct to 2,153,000 in 2019 from the previous year, decreasing for the second straight year, the tourism ministry said in a preliminary report Thursday.

The decline apparently reflected decreased service for Chinese people amid less profitability. People from China make up about 80 pct of the total.

The Japanese government has a goal of increasing the total number to five million this year, but achieving the figure is seen difficult.

The number of port calls in Japan by cruise ships dropped 2.2 pct to 2,867.

Of them, 1,932 visits were made by ships operated by foreign companies, down 1.0 pct. The number of visits by ships from China declined some 10 pct, while the number of port calls in Japan by ships originating in the country rose about 20 pct.

Port calls in Japan by cruise ships mainly for affluent customers increased.

Naha port in Okinawa Prefecture received the largest number of visits by cruise ships, at 251 times, followed by Hakata port in Fukuoka Prefecture, at 205, and Nagasaki port, at 178.
