The Olympic World Skateboarding Tour just concluded in Dubai, and Japan took home the gold.

Represented by Kairi Netsuke and Liz Akama, this win puts Japan firmly back in the running for the Paris Olympics.

The WST is a street skateboarding tournament, held as part of the regular Olympic roster, holding the same points as other events. This year, the WST was attended by 238 athletes representing 63 countries, near an all-time high.

The men’s title was claimed by Netsuke, while the 15-year-old Liz Akama clinched the women’s title. Their victories showcased Japan’s strong presence in global skateboarding.

Liz Akama won the event with a showstopping move called a “frontside 270 lipslide”, with the winning move being performed mere seconds before the timer ran out.

The WST is one of the title events in the “Road to Paris” roster being run by the Olympic Federation. It aims to be a stepping stone for young skaters looking to compete at Paris in the upcoming Olympic Games.

The management of the event was rather pleased with both the outcome and the turnout.

Ray Tinston, the event director, remarked: “These past two weeks have been incredible, and we’re proud to have hosted a spectacle that sets a new standard for future events. The positive reception from skaters and audiences, whether on social media or here in person, towards the Park and Street competitions, has been clearly visible to everyone.”

Japan’s young champions are now eyeing Olympic glory, ready to dazzle on the global stage.
