TOKYO: While Tokyo is seen as a “magnet” for tourists and businesspeople alike, the Japanese don’t rank it as the best place to live.

Nikkan Gendai reports that a poll conducted by Sony Life Insurance puts Fukuoka Prefecture in the far west as the No. 1 place to live in Japan.

Sony Life Insurance’s “Lifestyle Awareness Survey of 47 Prefectures” polled 100 people from each prefecture.

Fukuoka Prefecture came out on top, with people citing its convenience, great food, low cost of living, family-oriented lifestyle, and support for families. Fukuoka City was regarded as “lively” with a good economy and an airport that is very close to the city center.

The prefectures with Japan’s biggest cities – Tokyo and Osaka – came in second and fifth, respectively, in the poll, while last year’s winner, Hyogo Prefecture, dropped to third.

Hyogo includes another big city, Kobe, and is close to Osaka, but it has a much more relaxed and countryside feel. It has many historical and cultural sites, such as Himeji Castle, and faces the Seto Inland Sea. It is rich in nature and has mountains such as Mt. Rokko, which is also close to a famous hot spring area.

Hiroshima Prefecture to the west of Hyogo was placed fourth and has similar attractions to Hyogo, but Hiroshima City is much smaller.
