Japanese sushi chain Kappa Sushi recently added Fried Chicken Nigiri to its menu just in time for the holiday season.

Kappa Sushi created the special roll by offering seasoned and breaded chicken fillet on top of sushi rice with mayo. Another option offered for the next holiday meal is chicken with black pepper or togarashi spicy pepper.

Fried chicken is a staple as part of the Christmas celebrations in Japan after KFC introduced the ‘Party Barrel’ sold during the holiday.

The idea of the ‘Party Barrel’ came from Takeshi Okawara in 1970, when he was the manager of the first KFC in Japan. He heard foreigners in the country speak about how they had missed having a Christmas turkey meal, so he created the special meal as a substitute to help foreigners celebrate.

However, the ‘Party Barrel’ became a national phenomenon and millions of Japanese families have the meal for the holiday season every year.
