TOKYO: The Mori Memorial Foundation Institute for Urban Strategies has announced the 2021 “City Ranking of the World,” with London at the top, followed by New York and Tokyo.

The rankings are based on a city’s economy, transportation, environment, accommodation, culture, and research and development.

London’s overall score dropped to 1644.1 from 1661.1 but held on to its top rank for the 11th successive year thanks in part to its first place in the culture category.

New York’s score also dropped, to 1482.9 from 1514.9 in 2020, but was top-ranked in the “economy” and “research and development” fields. However, it was pulled down by its “environment,” where it ranked 21st, and “accommodation,” a lowly 40th out of the 48 cities in the listing.

Tokyo maintained third place for the fifth year and was the only one of the top three to increase its score, from 1386.5 to 1411.0.While it failed to top any of the categories, it managed to rank fourth in “economy”, “research and development” and “culture,” which scored highly thanks to the Olympic Games.
