TOKYO: Tokyo’s iconic Rainbow Bridge is currently lit up with 520 LED lights as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Upon its opening on August 26, 1993, the bridge became a symbol of Tokyo, partly due to its location at the waterfront entrance to the city and partly due to its double-deck design with two levels of highways and a monorail train line.

Rainbow Bridge was built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, with construction starting in 1987 and completed in 1993.

The bridge is 798 meters long with a main span of 580 meters. The top of the supporting towers are 126 meters high and the upper-level highway is 52 meters above the sea.

A website has been created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening of Rainbow Bridge and there is also a photo exhibition and puzzle-solving event.

The photo exhibition is being held on the 1st floor of the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Photographs taken by photographer HAMADA Hideaki under the theme of “You and the bridge that connects you” are on display.
